The 1972 Hinchliffe Catalogue.

In 1972 Frank Hinchliffe was employing Peter Gilder as his figure sculptor. They were producing a minimum of one new figure per day and in order to advertise the rapidly growing ranges he produced this catalogue. I was very kindly given this by Jim Sweeney at the Partizan Show this year. It was also at this show that I turned down the offer of buying from Jim the original unit of British Napoleonic Household cavalry painted by the great man! I still cant believe I didn't buy them.
Contained in the catalogue was a couple of articles by Peter regarding the organisation of his Napoleonic units for his developing rules that would finally see light of day as In the Grand Manner.
He also produced a small article about how he painted his figures which is truly informative, well for me it is.
Please excuse the small amount of graffiti on some of the pages. The booklet is over 40 years old.

Peter Gilder and Frank Hinchliffe admiring their latest offerings. One was allowed to smoke inside in those days. No health and safety nazis back then.

  1. Wonderful Robbie - many thanks. I have a 1976 Hinchcliffe Catalogue and am amazed at the level of detail, colours for units, organisation charts etc. that were included to help promote the hobby in those days.

    1. Carlo,
I was really chuffed when I was given this catalogue. I had never seen this before. There was also a good article by Bob O'brien about ancients in the book. The black and white photographs still showed the quality of the painting. A great gift.

  2. Agreed! Great stuff. Thank you for sharing it along with the previous four articles.

    Best Regards,

    1. My pleasure Stokes. I have neglected this labour of love, but I am determined to capture Duncan Macfarlane and finally get the back story to the founding of Miniature Wargames. What was very clear, it was a typical Peter Gilder project with a dodgy financial backer.

  3. Thank you very much indeed for postings these, Robbie. PG's tips have stood the test of time if the way I paint my troops is anything to go by. I really think it must have been one of Peter's painting articles that go me started. I only vaguely remembered it as it was so many years ago.
    Cheers

    1. My pleasure. I stopped using oils many years ago, but the hosrses I painted when I did were my best work. A simple procedure but never bettered. Maybe I should return to oils?
